Release: EU Parliament Approves AI Act, Including Common-Sense Safeguards on Advanced General-Purpose AI

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the European Parliament approved the EU AI Act, a comprehensive legislative framework for regulating artificial intelligence. Jason Green-Lowe, Executive Director of the Center for AI Policy, a nonpartisan advocacy group urging Congress to require safe AI, released the following statement:

"The Center for AI Policy applauds the EU Parliament for approving the EU AI Act today, especially Article 52d, which requires common-sense precautions for advanced general-purpose AI. If an AI system is powerful enough to pose 'systemic risks' to 'public health and safety,' then its designers are now legally required to evaluate those risks, take steps to mitigate them, track serious incidents, and ensure adequate cybersecurity. America should do no less."
